Charli XCX – True Romance (F&G MUST HAVE)

Charli XCXfor scene ENGLISH SINGER SONGWRITER

Charli XCX - PUB1 - Photo by Dan Curwin

I’ve sat on giving my review of the new Charli XCX album, mostly because I love it so much and not knowing what to write, but also I’ll start listening to it and just have to finish.  We all know where she samples from, know the vibe she’s emitting, but I think Charli XCX is in the right place at the right time.  I say this in a way as the state of how “we” are right now, what we “want” and what we “lack” and how she can fill it.  Charli fills a void of sorrow and hopes, with a sharp energy that lunges at you, stabs you to get to your feet and start freakin’ running.  It is moody, dark, dirty, vulgar, sexy, and emotional.  I look back at my days of being overly emotional, dramatic, and chaotic, and this music fits PERFECTLY with who I am.  So, who should listen to this?  Former Emo’s, Goth’s, those who love the 90s, dreamers, and darkwavers.

Hailing from an epicenter of this form of sound, Charli XCX brings her crass British slang, whit, and humor along with the ride as well.  I was initially drawn to Charli when a friend posted “Nuclear Seasons” on his facebook wall.  I was like “Who is this!!!”, and instantly sold.  As I watched more of her videos and listened to more of her sound, I knew she was British, a type of musician who always seems to catch my fancy, especially the ones who know how to really experiment, and of course belt it out!

So we of course know now that she has a style, “retro 90s”, harsh lines, broken graphics, and technology from the decade.  With some of her sounds bringing familiarity to movies from that decade, we listen, and envision opening and closing credits, epic kisses, sex scenes, and the moments of truth, the freeze frame!  Does this mean that she’s only relatable to those who were alive to live these experiences?  NO WAY!  I think what got me stuck was her mix tape which took samples from Cruel Intensions, Kill Bill, and American Beauty.

So now we got an amazing mix, feeding the fuel of her first major labeled album (she previously had a MySpace album entitled 14, which to this day she bashes as something that’s not really her).  True Romance, includes all these amazing mix tapes songs, in their entirety, mastered, and arranged in a manner that keeps you locked in for the ride.   After I got the deluxe album (worth it for the remixes), I needed to see her in concert.  She played at SXSW this year, swooned the crowed, and was given a U.S. tour.  I crossed my fingers for her tour to hit Boston and BAM!  It did!  Mark your calendars for May 25th, at Great Scott.  Tickets are on sale and can be found here.  Get them before they sell out!

I’m going to leave you with the lyrics to one of my fav tracks on the album “So Far Away”.  Sweet, simple, vulgar, and sexy.  F&G will have some special copies of this album for those hardcore Charli XCX fans, so find me, confess your love, and we can geek out on how much we love her.  Groupies, forever!

“So Far Away”

Give me the poison
I love the poison
Hooked on the poison

I can’t believe all those things that you said
You broke my heart and you fucked with my head again
So I run (so long ago and so far away)
I can’t believe all those things that you said
You are the poison, I’ll drink the poison

Get out my head, get out my bed
I don’t believe those, the words that you said
Pocket of lies, crystal blue eyes
Hit the ground hard when I’m dropped from the skies
You’re coming up when I’m going down
Never in sync so we just sink and drown
Press restart and reboot my heart
But I’m not a robot so I fell apart
Before the moment that we met we were chatting on the Internet
Getting kinda close through the posts that we were looking at
I was pretty confident, you were pretty into that
I linked you to my music just to see if you’d be into it
So fuck the prologue, read the Internet blogs
“Gonna love this star and it came from the clubs.”
I wasn’t looking for a fuck, I was looking for a bad boy
Bad boy, motherfucker, destroy

I can’t believe all those things that you said
You broke my heart and you fucked with my head again
So I run (so long ago and so far away)
[x2]
I can’t believe all those things that you said
You are the poison, I’ll drink the poison
I want the poison, I need the poison
Give me the poison
I love the poison
Hooked on the poison

(So far away
So long ago and so far away
So far away
So long ago and so far away)

Now I know for sure that we’ve got to end this
You don’t get no last kiss
‘Cause you’re so damn crazy
And I’m so damn helpless
So don’t text my number
And don’t call my mother
I can’t see your face now
‘Cause this is over

I can’t believe all those things that you said
You broke my heart and you fucked with my head again
So I run (so long ago and so far away)
I can’t believe all those things that you said
You are the poison, I’ll drink the poison
(So long ago and so far away)

Cover Model Jeffrey: Photoshoot and Interview

Hometown: Adams, MA
Profession: Multimedia Management
Hobbies: Writing, Photography, Cheesecake
Favorite Album: “At Last!” – Etta James
Favorite Song: “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” – Whitney Houston
Favorite Artist: Sia Furler

F&G: How does it feel being a cover model for F&G? Have you ever modeled before?
Jeffrey: I can be a little timid. This was an opportunity to sort of force myself to come out of my shell. I’ll only say this once. I’ve. Never. Modeled. Before. If you find nudies on the internet, they’re fakes and you should contact my lawyer with the web address. In college, I needed to make some extra cash, so I did do the unthinkable, I sold my pancreas on the black market which is how I became a diabetic, but I have never modeled.

_MG_0912

F&G: You enjoy carrying around a big red balloon? How do you think it aided with the look you were going for? How do you think the other cublings will view you?
Jeffrey: I’ve taken to carrying a red balloon since the shoot, yes. I’ve also added a propeller hat and knee high socks to really seal the deal. As far as the other cublings are concerned, I won’t beat around the bush; they’re jacking my style left and right, adding their own swagger to it. I did see a cub and one toddler with yellow balloons yesterday and whoever said yellow balloons were the new red balloons was seriously disturbed.

F&G: We think that the big red balloon made you just so adorable we could just eat you up! Would you say that’s an attribute you like to have?
Jeffrey: I do endorse people thinking I’m adorable. If I knew that all I needed was a big red balloon, I would have bought one when I came out of the closet a decade ago. Hopefully, it’s not just the balloon. I tried carrying cute puppies, but they steal the spotlight. The big red balloon disarms without completely distracting from my chubby cheeks and furry bod.

_MG_0926

F&G: What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Jeffrey: Cheeky, introspective, and, I suppose, a bit fanciful.

F&G: Tell us a little secret about yourself that someone might not know!
Jeffrey: Well, actually, here’s something I’ve been sitting on for a while now. It has been a bit troublesome and even destroyed a few casual friendships. I’ve been careful about who I come out to with this but… I don’t like Julianne Moore. Aside from her fluke performances in The Hours and A Single Man, she’s a basic bitch.

_MG_0890

F&G: What is your current look that you are going for? We know you are growing out your beard, is there someone famous you are looking at for inspiration?
Jeffrey: I’m a Libra so I’m always balancing… accessories. My look usually has some fem or camp qualities to combat the scruff. That whole thing about taking off one element of your outfit before leaving the house has always eluded me. I think I look great in thick glasses, scarves, bracelets, necklaces, bowties, chaps, suspenders, stirrups, and even better when I’m wearing them all at once. I am very pumped about growing out my beard. Someone suggested I go for the William Fitzsimmons look and I suppose subconsciously I am working towards that, but with bright colors and floral prints.

F&G: How does music fit into your every day life?
Jeffrey: If I’m not listening to music, I’m not in a good place. Like most Bostonians, I feel naked without my ear buds or headset.

_MG_0994

F&G: What songs are blowing up your play lists these past few months?
Jeffrey: One of this month’s releases, Charli XCX, has really gotten my booty bouncing. I’m into her tracks “What I Like” and “Grins.” I’ve also been feeling Tove Lo, who you (Sean) introduced me to. I’m always listening to soul divas. Aretha, Etta, and Amy are my comfort food. I’ve recently added Emeli Sande to that lineup.

F&G: How did you find out about F&G?
Jeffrey: You sold me on it with the promise of hot dudes and bartenders who don’t skimp on the sauce.

F&G: What about F&G makes you keep coming back for more?
Jeffrey: You held up your end of the bargain. I get a good buzz and meet some stand-up gentlemen. Obviously, the clientele and the music are a huge part of the experience. It’s definitely a more casual environment than your traditional, segregated “gay night” at a club. It’s nice to know most of the guys probably just threw on some clothes and gave themselves a quick spritz before coming rather than the sort of ritualistic preparation that a club might require.

Cover Model Rob: Photoshoot and Interview

_MG_0248

Hometown: Feeding Hills, MA
Profession: Fun-Employed
Hobbies: Painting, weight training, home cooking, refurbishing old furniture
Favorite Album: The Wild Party
Favorite Song: Fancy
Favorite Artist: Dolly Parton

F&G: How does it feel being a cover model for F&G?  Have you ever modeled before?
Rob: Ever since I knew about F&G I wondered how you got to be a cover model. I always thought you had to apply or something. Luckily for me one of my buddies who was a previous cover model had dropped a hint that I was interested because I was to shy to bring it up. I was having a pretty rough start to the year so when he sent me a text saying I was one of the next cover models for F&G I was ecstatic. As far as modeling…Ive only done one shoot a few years ago and it was to get some photos for naughty Christmas Cards. But I do have a tumblr! DeviantOtter (NSFW)

F&G: So these month’s theme is “Nordic”, what would you say your viking qualities are?  Would you survive those harsh cold winters with that scruff?  What would you and other cute viking folk do for fun with all that fur?
Rob: I would have to say my strongest viking quality is my strength in knowing how to use a sword; especially when to use mine or turn the other cheek. I’m also pretty good at building a robust fire – Love gathering up some wood to turn up the heat! And to mention I’m not to shabby at pitching a tent for those cold winter nights for all my viking buddies. When the sun sets over the glacial horizon we retire to my warm, man-scented tent, crack up open a few bottles of mead and let the fur fly!

F&G: What would your ideal type of guy be like from the Nordic region?
Rob: He’s between the age of 18-45 and has a pulse. They’re all woofy right?

F&G: What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Rob: Goofy, Musky, Sincere

_MG_0216

F&G: Tell us a little secret about yourself that someone might not know!
Rob: Well most of my dirty secrets are already on the internet. But I have some weird phobias that people might not know. I’m deathly afraid of licking envelopes and I will pretty much faint if I touch ice with my bare hands.

F&G: Have you ever been told you look like someone else?  If so, who?  How did you react?
Rob: I get Eminem all the time from people. However, people confuse me the most for the gay rapper, Cazwell, especially if I’m wearing a fitted hat (I guess I look like a thug?) The first few times it happened I would just blush and say thank you, even though I don’t think its a compliment cause I’ve met him and he’s a smooth twig, I’m all furry beef, baby! But time has gone on though if people ask or say something I just go along with it for as long as I can to fuck with them or at least get a free drink!

F&G: How does music fit into your every day life?
Rob: I would probably curl up into a little ball and die if I didn’t get to listen to music every day. Music is a HUGE part of my life.  Music isn’t something that I just like to listen to, but is also something I like to engage myself in when the opportunity is present.  Most people don’t know, but I was in musicals from the age of 7 up until I was 21 and have been singing for as long as I can remember (not the greatest but I love it haha). I also played the trumpet from grammar school up until the end of high school were I was first chair. You can also find me sometimes doing karaoke after a few hard drinks. As far as listening to music, I probably clock at least 3 hours a day between riding the T, going to the gym or just dancing in front of the mirror at home. Music makes me lose control!

_MG_0293

F&G: What songs are blowing up your play lists these past few months?
Rob:
1. Anything, and I mean ANYTHING from Smash. I cannot get enough Smash!!
2. Crying – Kree Harrison’s cover of Roy Orbison
3. Blue – LeAnn Rimes
4. Turn on The Radio – Reba McEntire
5. Crazy – Patsy Cline
6. Trouble – Lauren Alaina
…..basically any female country artist who’s been hurt or pissed off by men acting like boys.

F&G: How did you find out about F&G?
Rob: My buddies take an obsession with music to a whole other level and they know that F&G has some amazing tracks so they brought me one night and I’ve been going ever since.

F&G: What about F&G makes you keep coming back for more?
Rob: The strong drinks and all of the sexy, furry men…and the music of course!

Cover Models Jason & Johannes: Photoshoot and Interview

Johannes
Hometown: New York City
Profession: Research on HIV and LGBT Mental Health
Hobbies: Video games, Dance Dance Revolution, step (like in Stomp the Yard), anime/manga, webcomics, activism, cooking and baking poorly, playing with dogs that are not mine.
Favorite Album: “The Meaning of 8″ by Cloud Cult
Favorite Artist: Can I pick 2? Industrial/Metal/Goth: Angelspit. Indie Rock: Johnny Foreigner

Jason
Hometown: Kingston/Boston, MA
Profession: Unitarian Universalist minister and community organizer
Hobbies: watching movies on opening night, riding bikes, writing things, eating tasty food, teasing people I love
Favorite Album: are Broadway musicals albums?
Favorite Artist: Michael Jackson, obviously

F&G: How do you both feel being a cover model for F&G?
Johannes: As you saw during the photo shoot, I was pretty nervous about it. But the photos came out better than I expected, and being photographed with Jason put me at ease somewhat. I’m mostly just happy to be part of what I think is a really positive aspect of Fur and Gold: promoting the beauty of many different kinds of bodies, and bringing in folks from the community, rather than stock photos of modelesque men, to be the face of the party on all the advertising
Jason: So fun.  Sean is a very sweet photographer.  It was a great time.  Posting on Facebook has made for some hilarious interactions – namely with my Mom

_MG_0135_web

F&G: What three words would you use to describe yourselves?
Johannes: Awkward, earnest, and goofy.
Jason: Cozy, cuddly, armed&dangerous

F&G: Johannes, you have a twin!  Have you used this for your advantage at all?  Tell us a lil’ story!
Johannes: Haha, everyone expects twins to pull some kind of switcheroo at some point, but I promise that’s nothing but a movie cliche. It would never work in real life, and I honestly don’t think we look enough alike to be confused for each other- although some people apparently can’t tell the difference (ahem, Sean). But I think being twins works out for us in all kinds of ways- we’re best friends for life, and we’re into a lot of the same music, video games, TV shows, etc. etc., but we’re not attracted to the same people so we never have to compete. Plus, he makes some kickass pancakes. And we give each other massages. Our bromance is pretty awesome.

F&G:  Jason, you have an interesting profession, tell us about it and how it influences your views on life!
Jason: When I was pretty young I felt really called to ministry.  It became more complicated as I grew up and realized that most conceptions of God didn’t really work for me.  Unitarian Universalism has provided me the space to explore what it means to do justice work in a way that recognizes the interconnectedness of all existence while also believing in the need of those experiencing oppression to shape their/our own theologies of liberation.  My ministry has allowed me to both serve in a congregation, which I did for 7 years here in Boston, and to work in the community to meet  the needs of LGBTQ people in prison while simultaneously working towards the abolition of all cages.

_MG_0158_web

F&G: How does music fit into your every day life?
Johannes: I’m listening to music almost constantly- walking down the street throughout my day, doing boring stuff at work, working out, or chilling at home, my iPod is always on. But the part of my life where music is most essential is during workouts. Not only do I find it impossible to muster up the motivation to exercise without music, my gym time is my me time, when I get to just block out the rest of the world and release all my stress and tension, and music helps me achieve that escape.
Jason: I love to have music playing in my ears when I am sitting at my computer working on projects or putting together a sermon.  I love lots of embarrassing music, as well as what other people have termed “good” music.  I LOVE dancing… and music with lots of fun beats make that far more possible.  Sometimes there seems to just be music playing in my head and I feel the need to dance around outside, in a store, or waiting for the T.

_MG_0140_web

F&G: Give us a little fact about yourselves that people might not expect.
Johannes: I’m utterly obsessed with Pokemon and will play every new game that comes out- and when the franchise comes to an end, that will be a sad, sad day for me.
Jason: I’m a pretty great shot with a .38 revolver

F&G: What songs are blowing up your play lists these past few months?
Johannes: This paragraph could go on forever! My musical taste is really broad, and a lot of my favorite bands have released new albums recently. “Forest Serenade” and “The Leopard and the Lung” are my current favorite songs from The Joy Formidable’s new album. I also just recently dicovered Parenthetical Girls’ “Safe as Houses,” which is one of the most beautifully tragic, lyrically impeccable albums I’ve ever heard. On the more aggressive side of things, I’ve been digging “Absolute Psalm” on Igorrr’s new album “Hallelujah-” it’s one crazy experimental electronic metal mindfuck of a track. Then there’s “In Yr Underwear” by Fox N’ Wolf- there’s just something about cutesy, bratty female vocalists with rude, aggressive lyrics that gets me so pumped. On that note, “212″ by Azealia Banks will be blowing up my playlist until the end of time.
Jason: Dating Johannes has pushed me to go to more shows the past year than I have gone since I was a little punk rocker and hanging out in basement shows.  We went to see Exit Music and that was super fun, but I’m terrible with song names, though I certainly like them.  When we went to see Jezabels I learned about Imagine Dragons and the sexy lead singer who played a big drum with his hot strong arms.

F&G: How did you find out about F&G?
Johannes: Through Jason, actually. Our first date was at The Alley. =)
Jason: I’ve known Sean since 2005… so I learned about it from him I do believe.

F&G: What about F&G makes you keep coming back for more?
Johannes: The chill, open, alternative atmosphere, and of course the eye candy.
Jason: Brent’s cute self DJing, fake beer, furry faces, nice smiles, and bumping into homos I know.

DJ Taffy’s Top Ten Songs and Albums of 2012

St_BandPhotoBanner

Sorry to disappoint followers of Mayan prophecies, but the world did not come to a fiery end during the latter days of 2012.  Rather, we simply (to quote the stoic Brits of World War II) kept calm and carried on.  And what better way to keep sanity in your life during such occasionally insane times than to fire up the iPod, CD player or turntable and lose yourself in the world of pop.  This music lover/consumer/critic found a lot to love in 2012, practically none of it to be found at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.  Can someone please explain to me what a Flo Rida is?  Anyone?  You might not hear me playing all my faves at a DJ gig, but rest assured they were the soundtrack to my weekend car rides to Ptown, days working at Harvard Med, and evenings socializing with good friends.

Before my selections are revealed (drum roll, please), a few words about the process.  All songs and albums commercially released on download or CD in 2012 were eligible, although it’s possible a song or two seeing a very late 2011 release may have snuck through if they didn’t come to my attention ’til early ’12 (so call off the dogs!).  Songs and albums are ranked from 1-10 with 1 being the best of the best, but it’s a fairly loose ranking and had I compiled these lists another day the order may be slightly different.  I’ve also provided five “runner-up” songs and albums.  As with any proper beauty pageant (or jury), if a finalist cannot fulfill his or her duties, an alternative is provided!  Enjoy, and happy listening to all.

Sean’s Top 10s of 2012

Ellie-Goulding2

2012 was a great year for growth, relationships, and big changes in my life.  I turned 30 years old this year, and with it I made a promise to myself to life a healthier and fuller life.  With that I made the big decision to stop drinking alcohol, exercise my mind, and learn to give back.  With the help of some fellow peers, we saw that start of a non profit called the Boston LGBTQIA Artist Alliance (BLAA Website), providing resources, community, and support to LGBTQIA Artists. I finally saw people who really want to pull things together, share knowledge and give back.  With this idea of giving back to the community I recently started volunteering my time at the the local HIV clinic here in Boston.  Just a little bit of help goes a long way I like to say.  I wanted to broaden my knowledge, and also learn from what goes on and behind these resources.  I also saw a start of a new job/career teaching as an after school mentor for high school students, educating them about innovation through and ArtScience approach.  All these things I would have never imagined myself doing, or let alone being interested in.  Take away one thing, and three emerge, much better and more positive!

I also have gained an amazing boyfriend, best friend, and lover.  Gerald, who is my partner in crime, has provided me with more love and support than anyone has in a LONG time.  He always knows how to cheer me up, and has taught me a thing or two about love, relationships, and needs in life.  With his ever enchanting smile and warm hugs, Gerald is also a long lover of pop culture and music.  With that, much of my music went from GLUM to HAPPY!  We spent most of the summer dancing around and singing bad pop music, but you know what, I DON’T CARE!  HAH!~  So with that, my charts, skewed by fun, happiness, and teenie pop might skew our Top 10s this year!  All plays are calculated by LastFM scrobbles and iTunes plays.

Hometown: Juneau, Alaska
Profession: Community Manager for a happiness company
Hobbies: Spending too much time on the internet
Favorite Album: The first Spice Girls album. Anyone who hates it, hates themselves.
Favorite Song:  Shooting Stars-Bag Raiders
Favorite Artist: Dan Mangan

F&G: How does it feel being a cover model for F&G?
Andrew: Well, I’m flattered! It’s kind of a nice little ego boost. I always have a blast at F&G so it’s awesome getting to be a part of it, even if it’s in small way.

F&G: What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Andrew: Feisty, Loyal, Precise and a 4th would be Taco.

F&G: So from Alaska eh? I’m sure you got something interesting to say about it there!
Andrew: Haha yes I’m a very proud Alaskan. Not too sure what I can say that you haven’t already seen on TV but, I have seen the Northern Lights more times than I can count. Fishing with my Dad was my favorite summer activity. If I could replace beef with moose in my weekly diet, I would. Um, I would have to say that living in Alaska gave me an appreciation for winter, so it’s hands down my favorite season.

F&G: How does music fit into your every day life?
Andrew: I challenge you to find a time in my day where I’m not wearing headphones. I feel like I should be sponsored by Bose. My life is pretty much “shake to shuffle” and so is my music. If you were to go through my most played songs on iTunes library I could probably tell you a amazing story associated with the first 100, and that’s exactly how I like my music. Finding new music just means I have to find a new things to do while listening to it.

F&G: Give us a little fact about yourself that people might not expect.
Andrew: I really REALLY don’t care for cake. Like at all. I’m also the tallest person in my family at a WHOPPING 5’7.5″.

F&G: What songs are blowing up your play lists these past few months?
Andrew:
On The Metro-Girls Aloud
Bernal Heights-Jhameel
It Gets Dark-Holy Ghost
Heartbeat (Justin Faust Remix)-Childish Gambino
Trojans (Lenno remix)-Atlas Genius
Leaving (Psb Side-by-Side Remix)-Pet Shop Boys

F&G: How did you find out about F&G?
Andrew: I was actually invited by a new friend that I met on twitter, who was a cover model earlier this year! (LOVE YOU JEREMY COX!)

F&G: What about F&G makes you keep coming back for more?
Andrew: It’s the only place where I can get a dirty martini and a bearded man at the same time.
